Upcycling is about creatively working with materials, but it’s also a social process and way of thinking – sometimes with unexpected and serendipitous overlaps. We met Janette Murray-Wakelin and Alan Murray at the Sustainable Living Festival. They just spent three years making RAW the Documentary. It’s a film about their commitment to raw food and their aim is to inspire others to make informed decisions about sustainable lifestyles.
Just as raw food sustained them on their marathon journey around Australia, we are sustained by what others see as peripheral material meant for landfill – like bicycle chains and antique silver spoons. In our eyes, waste is the raw material that can be repurposed into new and beautiful objects. And this is why we gifted a bicycle bracelet, one of UpShop’s collections of wearables – for the Silent Auction at the premiere of RAW. Nice to think someone out there might jut be wearing this bracelet whilst enjoying raw food.
